Het uitroepteken wordt sinds 1808 gebruikt om het begrip faculteit aan te geven, 5! is bijvoorbeeld gelijk aan 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5. Niet iedereen was gelijk enthousiast over deze nieuwe notatie. In 1842 klaagde Augustus de Morgan:
Amongst the worst of barbarisms is that of introducing symbols which are quite new in mathematical, but perfectly understood in common, language. Writers have borrowed from the Germans the abbrevation n! to signify 1 x 2 x 3 x ... x (n-1) x n, which gives their pages the appearance of expressing surprise and admiration that 2, 3, 4, etc., should be found in mathematical results.
